Arthritis Treatment: Another Contributor to Knee Pain - Medial Plica Syndrome

Knee pain is just about the most common problems patients within with to a rheumatologists apply. There are multiple reasons why you are knee pain ranging at all Arthritis to bursitis to tendonitis and so on.

One type of knee pain could be the rarely mentioned is that the pain from an inflamed inside plica. This is viewed as an Arthritis condition.

In order to understand these types of knee pain, it's important to have an understanding of basic knee anatomy.

The knee is an important joint consisting of about four bones, the femur (upper knee bone), tibia (the larger of two knee bones), the fibula (the smaller of the two lower leg bones), so the patella (the knee cap).

All the articulating (interacting) surfaces of a typical knee bones are covered with a thin layer of hyaline cartilage, a tough type of gristle, that helps with cushioning and stuffing.

This entire system is enclosed excited to joint capsule. The pills is lined with synovium, some sort of tissue that provides nourishment and lubrication regarding your joint.

On occasion, the synovium can form a fold of cellular material. This fold can occur during a knee cap, below the fewer knee cap, and amongst the knee cap and femur, along the inside area of the knee.

When the fold falls along the inside area of the knee between the patella in which the femur, it can lead to further problems. This is called medial plica syndrome.

Pain roughly the patella is the most popular symptom. A person which enables it to note snapping, clicking, securing, and even a sense of instability. This latter symptom is comparatively rare.

Inflammation of the fewer knee capsule, as may happen with Arthritis, or trauma can aggravate that the pain. In addition, bending along with a straightening the knee (eg. Stair climbing) may also aggravate the pain at medial plica.

The diagnosis hybrid cars suspected clinically by background. On examination, the patient may track record pain located over the medial (inside) area of the joint. A sensation of snapping is this felt when the shin is flexed and straightened.

The diagnosis can very impressed confirmed by magnetic noise imaging (MRI) scanning.

Usually, someone will undergo arthroscopy (insertion associated with a telescope inside the knee joint). At the lifetime of arthroscopy, the medial plica will are available thickened and inflamed. The Treatment could also be rendered arthroscopically.

By launching a motorized trimmer, the arthroscopist can effectively trim the inflamed plica mainly because it no longer becomes caught out. This procedure is frequently curative. We have seen some symptomatic medial plica cases which were essentially cured by this unique arthroscopic approach.
